Shared or private gondola rides, with serenade or passage under the Bridge of Sighs.
The gondola is the most atmospheric way to experience the Bridge of Sighs. From below, along the narrow Rio di Palazzo canal, you grasp the true scale of the bridge and the palaces that surround it. But to spend wisely and choose the right route, a little practical knowledge goes a long way.

What it is like to pass under the bridge by gondola
The Rio di Palazzo is a narrow canal, flanked by the walls of Palazzo Ducale and the Prigioni Nuove (New Prisons). The gondola slows, the gondolier steers with a single stroke of the oar and suddenly you are under the white arch of the Bridge of Sighs. It lasts only a moment, but it is the frame that stays with you.
It is also the perfect moment for the legend: they say that a kiss exchanged right here at sunset binds lovers together for ever. Romantic or not, it is a scene worth travelling for.
Prices: official rates and shared tours
This is where most confusion lies. Gondola rates are set by Venice City Council and calculated per gondola, not per person. A gondola holds up to 5 passengers.
| Option | How it works | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private gondola (official rate) | You hire the whole gondola, 30 min | ~ € 90 day / € 110+ evening | Couples, families |
| Shared tour | Share the gondola with others | from € 35 per person | Solo or couple travellers |
| Gondola with serenade | Musician and singer on board | from € 45 per person | Special occasions |
| Combined tour | Gondola + Doge's Palace or walking tour | variable | First-time visitors |

How to save money
- Split the gondola. In a group of 4–5 the per-boat rate becomes good value per head.
- Choose a shared tour if you are travelling as a couple or solo: you pay for your seat only.
- Avoid the evening if cost is a concern: the evening rate is higher.
- Agree the route and duration before setting off, to avoid surprises.
Guide's tip
My advice for couples: book a sunset tour departing from the San Marco area and specifically ask for the route to include the Rio di Palazzo. That way you are guaranteed to see the Bridge of Sighs from the water in the best light. In the middle of summer during the day, the canal is a gridlock of gondolas.
Where to board a gondola
Near the Bridge of Sighs there are several gondola boarding points (stazi):
- San Marco–Vallaresso and Bacino Orseolo — the closest to Piazza San Marco.
- Riva degli Schiavoni — convenient if you want a route that takes in the Rio di Palazzo straight away.
- Danieli — near the Ponte della Paglia.
If you book a tour online, the meeting point is shown on the voucher: arrive a few minutes early.
Alternatives to the gondola
The gondola is not the only way to see the bridge from the water:
- Vaporetto line 1 — inexpensive, but it does not enter the Rio di Palazzo; you only see the bridge from a distance.
- Private boat tour — more expensive, but flexible.
- View from the Ponte della Paglia — free, from above, for the classic photograph.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a gondola ride in Venice cost?
The official City Council rate is approximately € 90 per gondola (up to 5 people) for 30 minutes by day, and € 110–120 in the evening. It is per boat, not per person. Shared tours online start from approximately € 35 per person.
Does the gondola actually pass under the Bridge of Sighs?
Yes, routes in the San Marco area travel along the Rio di Palazzo and under the bridge. Confirm the itinerary includes it before booking.
How many people fit in a gondola?
Up to 5 passengers plus the gondolier. This is why splitting the cost in a group is good value.
Is it worth booking a gondola in advance?
For shared and serenade tours, yes — especially at sunset in peak season. For a private gondola you can also walk up to a stazio, but you risk a wait during busy periods.
