The best neighbourhoods to stay in
Venice is divided into six sestieri. To stay near the Bridge of Sighs, these are the ones that matter:
San Marco
The monumental heart of the city. 2–5 minutes from the bridge, the basilica and the historic cafés. Ideal if you want everything on your doorstep and price is no object. Busy streets by day, magical at dawn.
Castello
Immediately east of San Marco. Quieter and more authentic, with more reasonable prices. From the Riva degli Schiavoni you reach the bridge in a few minutes on foot.
San Polo & Rialto
Central and lively, with the market and plenty of bacari (wine bars). 10–15 minutes on foot from the bridge: a solid compromise between location and local atmosphere.
Dorsoduro
The arts and student quarter, more relaxed. A little further away (15–20 min), but with excellent restaurants and fewer crowds in the evening.

How to save on accommodation
- Book well in advance for Carnival, summer and bank-holiday weekends: prices rise quickly.
- Consider the mainland (Mestre) if your budget is tight: connected to Venice in 10–15 minutes by train.
- Check the city tax, which is often not included in the displayed price.
- Think about luggage access: in Venice you walk everywhere and cross bridges with steps.
Guide's tip
In Venice the real luxury is not an extra star but location. A 3-star in Castello, five minutes from the Bridge of Sighs, gives you crowd-free mornings and silent evenings that are worth far more than an anonymous room far from the centre. Book early and read the reviews for noise: the canals carry sound.
Logistics: getting there and getting around
A few practical notes for guests staying near the bridge:
- From Marco Polo Airport: bus to Piazzale Roma, then vaporetto, or the Alilaguna water bus direct to San Marco.
- From Santa Lucia railway station: vaporetto line 1 or 2 to San Marco / San Zaccaria.
- On foot: Venice is primarily a walking city; wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for bridges with steps.

Frequently asked questions
Which area is best for staying near the bridge?
San Marco is the closest and most convenient, but also the most expensive. Castello, just to the east, offers better value while remaining only a few minutes' walk from the Bridge of Sighs.
How much does a hotel near San Marco cost?
It depends on the season: on average from € 120–150 per night for a 3-star in low season, up to € 300 and above for luxury in high season.
Is it worth staying in Mestre to save money?
Yes, if you are on a tight budget. Mestre is connected to Venice in 10–15 minutes by train, with cheaper hotels, but you miss the atmosphere of the lagoon city in the evenings.
Do Venice hotels have parking?
Essentially no: cars do not enter the historic centre. You park at Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto car park and continue on foot or by vaporetto.
