Skip-the-queue entry, guided tours and combined experiences that include the Bridge of Sighs.
Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace) is the heart of Venetian power and the only way to cross the Bridge of Sighs from the inside. The visit combines gilded state rooms, masterworks by Tintoretto and Veronese and the unique experience of the passage to the prisons. Here is how to plan it well.

The Bridge of Sighs is included in the ticket
The most important thing to know: you do not need a separate ticket to cross the bridge. The standard Doge's Palace route leads from the state rooms, across the bridge and into the cells of the Prigioni Nuove (New Prisons). You walk exactly where the prisoners walked, looking out at the lagoon through the latticed windows.
There are no tickets that give access to "only the bridge": it is always part of a palace visit or a guided tour that starts there.
The visitor route, room by room
The palace is vast, but the route is linear. Here are the key highlights you will encounter:
- Courtyard and Giants' Staircase (Scala dei Giganti). The monumental entrance flanked by statues of Mars and Neptune.
- Doge's apartments and state rooms. Gilded ceilings and the great painted cycles.
- Great Council Chamber (Sala del Maggior Consiglio). Home to Tintoretto's Paradise, one of the largest oil paintings in the world.
- Bridge of Sighs. The covered passage to the prisons: the highlight of the visit.
- Prigioni Nuove (New Prisons). Stone cells, prisoners' graffiti and a sobering atmosphere.
Opening hours, prices and tickets
Doge's Palace generally opens at 9:00, with varying closing times depending on the season (later in summer). Last entry is normally one hour before closing. Exact hours and any exceptional closure dates are published on the official website.

How to skip the queue
- Book online with a timed entry slot: you skip the ticket-office queue, which can run to over an hour.
- Choose the first time slot (9:00–10:00) or late afternoon for fewer crowds.
- A skip-the-queue guided tour is worthwhile if you also want the historical commentary.
Secret Itineraries: beyond the standard route
For history lovers, the Secret Itineraries (Itinerari Segreti) tour is unmissable. It is a guided visit through rooms normally closed to the public: the offices of the secret chancellery, the chamber of the Three Heads of the Council, the torture room and the Piombi (Lead Rooms), where Casanova was imprisoned. It lasts about 75 minutes and must be booked separately.
Guide's tip
If you have half a day, combine the Secret Itineraries with the standard visit: do the guided tour of the hidden rooms first, then explore freely with the audio guide. You will leave understanding how power actually worked in Venice, not just how it was decorated.
What is nearby
Doge's Palace stands on Piazza San Marco, so you have everything within easy reach:
- Basilica di San Marco — 50 metres away, with its golden mosaics.
- Campanile di San Marco (St Mark's Campanile) — for panoramic views over the city.
- Ponte della Paglia — the best spot to photograph the Bridge of Sighs from outside.
- Gondola ride — to pass under the bridge by water (see our gondola tour guide).
Cross the bridge from the inside
Book the combined Doge's Palace and Bridge of Sighs tour, with a gondola ride through the San Marco basin.
